Where to taste

Niagara cellar doors worth the drive

Niagara has more than eighty places to pull up a stool, from grand Tuscan-style estates to a brewery in an 1894 church. Here are ten worth building a day around: wineries across the benches, a craft brewery, a small-batch distillery and a cider house.

Southbrook Organic Vineyards

Southbrook Organic Vineyards

Vineyard · Niagara-on-the-Lake · est 1991

Three generations of the Redelmeier family farm, now Canada's leader in regenerative organic winemaking. The Poetica Red and Whimsy Cabernet Franc are the wines to taste, and the wood-fired pizza on the patio earns its own visit. Also makes Wild Ferment Cider.

Tawse Winery

Tawse Winery

Vineyard · Vineland · est 2005

Moray Tawse's flagship, modeled on Burgundy and built into the escarpment as a six-level gravity-flow winery. The Quarry Road Chardonnay and the single-vineyard Pinots are the wines to taste. Demeter biodynamic since the early years.

Silversmith Brewing Company

Silversmith Brewing Company

Brewery · Virgil · est 2011

Brewing inside an 1894 restored church in Virgil. The Black Lager is the signature beer and the space itself is the reason to visit.

Pearl Morissette

Pearl Morissette

Vineyard · Jordan · est 2007

François Morissette trained in Burgundy at Domaine Roulot and Mugnier before coming home to make wine he calls 'for the world, not for Ontario.' The Cuvée Madeleine Cabernet Franc and the Coup de Cœur Chardonnay are the wines to taste. Two visit options: the Petit Caveau walk-in patio under the chestnut tree, or the Nucleus seated cellar tasting.

Two Sisters Vineyards

Two Sisters Vineyards

Vineyard · Niagara-on-the-Lake · est 2014

A Tuscan-style estate run by sisters Angela and Melissa Marotta. Kitchen 76 is the restaurant to book; the Stone Eagle red is the wine to order with it. High-end finishes, premium feel.

Dillon's Small Batch Distillers

Dillon's Small Batch Distillers

Distillery · Beamsville · est 2012

A Beamsville craft distillery making everything from Method 95 Vodka to estate-grown rye. The Unfiltered Gin is the calling card; the cocktail bar onsite is the right pause between wineries.

Ravine Vineyard Estate Winery

Ravine Vineyard Estate Winery

Vineyard · St. Davids · est 2008

An organic estate built on a heritage property in the St. Davids Bench sub-appellation. The restaurant is destination-worthy on its own; the Sand & Gravel Chardonnay is the wine to pair with the cheese plate.

13th Street Winery

13th Street Winery

Vineyard · St. Catharines · est 1998

A working winery with a bakery, an art gallery, and walking gardens. The Cuvée Rosé and Blanc de Noirs are the sparkling wines to taste; the Burger Blend Gamay is the casual pour. Plan time for the property itself.

Ironwood Cider House

Ironwood Cider House

Cidery · Niagara-on-the-Lake · est 2017

A NOTL cider house focused on dry, food-friendly ciders. The Yarrow and the Tradition are the ciders to taste; food menu is solid for a casual stop.

Inniskillin Wines

Inniskillin Wines

Vineyard · Niagara-on-the-Lake · est 1975

Canada's first estate winery, licensed in 1975, and the winery that put Canadian icewine on the world map at VinExpo 1991. Tour the production and taste the Vidal Icewine where it was born. The brisket burger has its own following.
